
Making Bathroom Heaters That Won’t Hurt Your Eyes
When you’re designing a heater for a bathroom, you’re playing a bit of a balancing act. You want it to get people warm fast, but you can’t just blast raw heat. You have to think about the eyes—especially when it comes to kids or babies who might be looking right up at the fixture.
Getting the light right
Most standard infrared lamps are way too aggressive. They’ve got this harsh glare and UV radiation that just isn’t great for your vision. To fix this, we use filtered spectrums. By using specific coatings or quartz glass, we can block out that sharp blue light and UV. It shifts the heat into a longer wave, which turns that blinding glare into a soft, gentle glow. You still get all the warmth you need to dry off in a steamy room, but your retinas aren’t taking a beating.
The struggle with waterproofing
Now, since this is for a bathroom, it has to be IP65 rated. That basically means it needs to be totally sealed off from splashes and steam. We wrap the lamps in tempered glass and use silicone gaskets to keep the water out. But here’s the tricky part:heat makes things grow. If we make the seal too tight, the glass will literally crack as it heats up. Too loose? Steam creeps in and fries the electronics. We spend a lot of time obsessing over those tiny tolerances so the quartz tube has room to breathe while staying completely watertight.
The trade-off
Here is the honest truth: when you filter the light to make it safer, you lose a little bit of that raw heating punch. You might need a slightly higher wattage to get the skin feeling warm. To keep things from getting too hot, we suggest using a PID controller or a decent dimmer. It stops the lamp from overshooting the target temperature and keeps that soft light consistent. And one last thing—make sure there’s some breathing room around the fixture. If the heat just sits there, it can bake the internal wiring, and nobody wants that.
