
How to pick the right infrared lamp for your bathroom
When you’re shopping for an infrared lamp, your first instinct might be to just grab the most powerful one on the shelf. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. It’s really all about the size of your room. If you get it wrong, you’re either wasting electricity or shivering in a cold bathroom. The cool part about shortwave infrared is that it doesn’t bother heating up the air—it goes straight for you and the surfaces around you. That’s why it’s such a win for bathrooms. Traditional heaters struggle when things get damp and steamy, but these just work.
Getting the power right
Think of your bathroom in three general sizes. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a single 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty. You’ll feel that warmth instantly. For something mid-sized (4-8m²), you’ll probably want a few lamps working together—somewhere between 600W and 1000W—so you aren’t just warm in one tiny spot. Then you’ve got the big master baths over 8m². Those need the heavy hitters, usually 1200W or more. But be careful. If you go way overboard with the wattage, you’re actually putting too much stress on the quartz glass, which can burn the lamp out faster. On the flip side, if you go too low, the lamp has to run forever to get the room warm, and your energy bill will show it.
The practical stuff
Most of these use R7s or Sk15 connectors, so swapping them out is pretty easy. I always suggest going with quartz glass; it lets the heat through much better. One thing people often forget:ceiling height matters. If your lamp is hanging at 2.5 meters, it’s going to feel a lot weaker than one sitting at 2.1 meters. If you’ve got high ceilings, you’ll need to bump up the wattage to make up for that extra distance. And a quick warning on the electrical side. High-wattage setups pull a lot of juice. Make sure your wiring and breakers can actually handle the load. If you try to run a 2000W array on thin wires, you’ll get a voltage drop. In plain English? Your lamp won’t get as hot as it’s supposed to.
