
Keeping Bathrooms Warm Without the Blinding Light
When you’re putting a ceiling heater in a bathroom, you’ve got a tricky balance to strike. You want that instant, cozy heat, but you don’t want the room to feel like a tanning salon. This is especially important if you’ve got babies or toddlers around—their eyes are way more sensitive than ours, and the last thing you want is a harsh glare hitting them while they’re getting changed.
How we kill the glare
Most standard short-wave lamps give off a blinding white light. Not great for a relaxing bath. To fix this, we play around with the filament and the coating on the quartz tube. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the heater. We use special filters that block out the visible light but let the heat—the infrared stuff—slide right through. We aim for a specific sweet spot (between 0.7 and 1.4 microns) so the warmth hits your skin and the tiles, but doesn’t irritate your eyes. You get the heat, but the room stays dim and comfortable.
The trade-off
Here’s the catch: those filters don’t come for free. They add a bit of resistance. Because the filter blocks some of the energy, a filtered lamp isn’t quite as “punchy” as a raw one. If you install a 250W lamp with eye protection, it might actually feel more like a 200W lamp. It’s a small price to pay for safety, but you’ve got to keep it in mind when you’re planning how much heat the room actually needs.
Getting it installed right
These units usually go into the ceiling using moisture-resistant housings—standard stuff for a steamy bathroom. We use quartz glass because it can handle being turned on and off rapidly without cracking. But a quick tip:don’t block the vents. These lamps get hot. If the air can’t move, that heat builds up and can actually eat away at the filter coating. If that happens, the filter fails, the blinding light comes back, and you lose that eye protection. Keep it vented, and it’ll work perfectly for years.
